Day-1: In Leh: Visit Palaces & Monasteries / Shanti Stupa & Leh City Centre.
After breakfast drive up the Indus Valley to visit the dramatically located Thiksey M onastery, a major Gelukpa foundation dating from the 16 th century, which is one of the most vibrant & active monasteries in the region. Returning from Thiksey, you may like to walk up the palace hill at Shey to visit Shey Palace, earliest royal capital of the Kingdom founded in the 16 th century. Within the complex you can admire the two gigantic copper- gilt statues of the Buddha installed during the 17 th century. Thereafter you may like to visit the Druk Padma School (of 3 Idiot Film fame) at Shey.
In the afternoon drive to explore the 9-storied Leh Palace dating from the 1600 AD, a historic landmark which renders a unique heritage character to Leh Town. Thereafter proceed to visit the Shanti Stupa , a prominent landmark located on a great vantage point overlooking Leh town & the valley. Wind up the day's tour with walks around the markets in the city centre and browse the shops for some souvenir shopping. Overnight at Leh.
Day- 2: Leh- Khardongla Pass - Nubra Valley / 125 kms / 4 - 5 hours
After breakfast leave for Nubra Valley , driving across the Khardong-la (alt: 18,380 ft.), famous as the highest motorable pass in the world. Nubra Valley lies at an average altitude of the valley is 10,000 ft. Till closure of the trans-Karakoram trade route by the Chinese in 1949, Nubra Valley was a busy trade corridor on the Central Asian trade network. ,
Reach Deskit / Hunder in the afternoon and check-in at your accommodation. Later, proceed to explore the white Sand Dunes where you can also take a short camel Safari on the double-humped Bactrian camel found here ( optional - direct payment ). Overnight at Hunder, Nubra
Day-3 : In Nubra: Excursion to Turtuk (Border village): 180 kms round trip / 5- 6 hours.
After breakfast drive to TURTUK, the beautiful enclave of Balti ethnic community, at about 80 kms from Hundar. Scenically magnificent the whole way apart from a few military installations, the grand rock valley briefly narrows near the tiny Changmar village after which the few green splashes of village change culturally and linguistically from Buddhist-Ladakhi to Muslim-Balti. The upper half of Turtuk has unforgettable views across the patchwork of fields towards the high peaks of Pakistan whose front line is only 07 kms away. Turtuk was in Pakistan until the 1971 war when it was captured by India.
From Turtuk, drive further on for about 7 kms. To Thang, the last village on the Indian side of the LOC. From here you can observe the Baltistan villages on the other side of the border. After sightseeing and lunch at Turtuk, drive back along the same route to Hundar.
Overnight at Hunder, Nubra.
Day-4: Nubra Valley -Shyok Valley- Durbuk- Pangong / 155 kms / 6-7 hours.
After early breakfast, proceed Deskit (headquarters of Nubra valley) and visit the gigantic image of Maitreya Buddha (32 mtrs ) seated out on a hillock which was inaugurated by The Dalai Lama in 2010. Thereafter, drive up the hillside to visit the 15 th cent ury Deskit Monastery dramatically located on a rock promontory overlooking the Nubra valley
Later, drive upstream the Shyok valley amidst magnificent mountain sceneries to approach Pangong Lake, by-passing the Khardongla route. The road passes through the pretty villages of Aghyam, Shyok & Durbuk en-route to Pangong Lake (alt: 14,500 ft.), which is the largest brackish water lake of Asia, about 4-5 kms wide and about 135 kms long, of which some two-third portion lies on the other side of the Indo-China border. Overnight at Pangong
Day-5: Pangong Lake - Changla (alt: 17, 370 ft.), Hemis - Leh / Approx. 160 kms. / 6-7 hrs.
After breakfast, leave Pangong Lake and retrace the road to Leh via Chang-la pass . Upon reaching Karu, take a short trip across the Indus to visit the 17 th century Hemis Monastery , biggest monastery and principal centre of the Drukpa-Kargyut monastic order in the Ladakh region. A museum set up recently in the complex displays some of the rare art treasure built up through the centuries and is well worth exploring. Later drive back to Leh, reaching in the afternoon. Overnight at Leh .
Day-6: Departure Leh: Transfer to Airport.
